Guess Who’s Coming?

For a very special occasion the rhododendrons at the Isaiah Jones Homestead Bed and Breakfast are in full bloom to provide a colorful welcome to Michele Chandler! Michele is the winner of the Select Registry Vacation of a Lifetime. She was chosen out of 49,853 entries to be one of the three grand prize winners. The winners get a free one-night stay in any of the Select Registry’s 350 best inns, bed and breakfasts, and small boutique hotels across the United States and Canada.

What makes this a vacation of a lifetime? Out of 20,000 inns and bed and breakfasts in North America, only 350 are a part of Select Registry. These properties go through unannounced quality inspections to be accepted and to keep their membership. This ensures guests only the best experience, and that’s what they’ll have at Isaiah Jones.

We are honored to be a member of Select Registry and to have Michele chose to spend a night with us!WP_20130531_016

We’re in bloom!

This month the Isaiah Jones Homestead Bed & Breakfast is surrounded by flowers.  They’re so beautiful that we just had to take some photos and share them with everyone.  The rhododendrons are particularly striking, but the irises are delightful and the wildflowers surrounding the shed behind the CarriaWP_20130531_005ge House are truly pretty as well.

Sandwich is getting into summer mode, too.  The Boardwalk has reopened after being closed for several months due to some severe damage from the storms we had over the winter.  In addition, access to the beaches is being repaired and improved, and we’re all getting ready for another Sandwich Fest on June 29thWP_20130531_009.

All of Cape Cod is gearing up for the summer season, too, with the welcome addition of the Cape Flyer train     as an option for transportation to the Cape from the Boston area.  Every town looks its best right now, too, with flowering trees and shrubs in bloom everywhere you look.  This is the most perfect time to drive the length of the Cape if you’ve chosen to come by car.   The weather is cooperating, too, to ensure that all of our guests have the very best Cape Cod vacationWP_20130531_016.WP_20130531_017WP_20130531_020

Valentine’s Day Reflections

Mom and DadOn February 14, 1949, Francis William Preston married Marguerite Lee Brown in a nuptial Mass celebrated at Corpus Christi Church in Wethersfield, Connecticut.  The groom was 29 years old and the bride was 25, each a bit older than the majority of their contemporaries.  Both had served in the United States Navy during World War II, then met singing in a church choir after the war.

Fran and Marguerite were the parents of five children, raising their brood first in Wethersfield and then in Chatham, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod.  Fran worked mainly as a meat cutter while Marguerite devoted most of her efforts to caring for their family.  They were married for 26 years when Marguerite died in 1975 at the age of 51, much too soon.  Fran continues to live on Cape Cod and, at the age of 93, is still a very active part of the community.  He volunteers to visit shut-ins, he sings for nursing home residents with a group from his church and he still participates in ceremonies for Veterans’ Day and Memorial Day celebrations, where he wears his Navy uniform.016

Fran and Marguerite’s eldest daughter, Katherine, and her husband, Donnie, are the owners of the Isaiah Jones Homestead Bed & Breakfast in Sandwich, Massachusetts, not far from Fran’s home.  Katherine says she owes her love of cooking to the lessons she learned as a child from Marguerite in the kitchen.  This year on Valentine’s Day, Katherine will spend a good portion of the day with her father, each re-telling tales from Valentine’s Days in the past when Fran and Marguerite were celebrating their anniversaries.  The rest of the day will be spent with Donnie, sharing some quiet time together and a special dinner at home.

Valentine memories should be cherished, indeed, and we hope that this day brings some lasting ones to you.
